I just returned from another intense weekend of ZenThai training and feeling energized to share all the knowledge I have received! We spoke about common issues that therapists find over and over again in clients and also about the reasons some of these issues are so pervasive. What came up was that your body is an amazing adaptable machine. Its always looking for shortcuts for things you do often to make them easier for you and to save energy. When you do repetitive movements or remain in certain positions often your body will shift and change and adapt as it thinks this is the new normal. But sometimes working against how are bodies are designed leads to changes that can result in long term pain and health problems.
In our modern world we are forcing ourselves into enduring things and repressing our bodies natural intelligence. Hunched over a keyboard all day shortens your pectoral muscles, sitting in a chair all day tightens your hip flexors. You end up with back pain, neck pain, bad posture, restricted breathing – many of our health problems are connected to each other. When we do things contrary to how are bodies are designed to move we constrict our muscles and in turn constrict our minds and souls constrict as well. An unwell body can create an unwell mind and an unwell mind can create an unwell body. The whole system works together and we must treat it holistically. Western medicine tends to want to look at symptoms in isolation and treat them with bandaids. But in reality we are so much more than a sum of our parts.
Things like what we eat, how we sleep, how we move and how we spend our time are all part of a wellness journey. Every choice you make has a huge impact on your well being. And small changes can make a big difference. stand up from your desk more often, take a short walk, go to bed 30 minutes earlier, spend 30 minutes less on your phone. Many of us have excuses – I don’t have time, I don’t have money, I’m tired and I’ll do it later. Its easier to turn on the TV and eat chips then it is to make a healthy dinner and go to the gym. But what is the long term cost of your choices?
As a ZenThai therapist I will work with you to spark the change needed to make you feel better but you also need to put in the work to make positive changes in your routines. Consistency is key. Build a better life. Build a better you. Listen to your body intelligence not the negative self talk.
